- learned that when "y" is at the end of a short, one-syllable word, it makes the same sound as when 'i' says it's own name. This happens in words like 'shy' or 'try' or 'my'
- learned the difference between fiction and nonfiction texts. Students sorted a collection of books into two piles: fiction and nonfiction.
- Students explored and discovered how different text features in nonfiction texts help us find and understand new information. We went on a scavenger hunt and students looked in nonfiction texts to for text features. Ask your child what is the difference between fiction and nonfiction text and have them tell you some text features that they remember (*hint: text features include table of contents, bolded words, labels, captions, photographs and maps)
- asked questions! We learned that in order to learn new things, we need to ask questions. Students brainstormed different question words (who, what, when, where, why, did, is) and then used these words to write questions to learn information about an unusual creature. Ask your child what they questions they learned about this unusual creature (and if any of their questions were answered when we learned about this animal!)
- learned the heart words: went, once, just
- explored three-dimensional shapes and learned the difference between 2D and 3D shapes. Students learned to name, sort and describe various sizes and orientations of cubes, prisms, cylinders, spheres, pyramids and cones
- had the opportunity to explore a nature kit from the City of Calgary. We learned about many birds native to Calgary, what they look like, sound like and what their eggs and nest look like.
