Hello families,

It's hard to believe that we are at the end of May and only have one month of grade one left! There are lots of things happening so please keep a close eye on the blog over the next few weeks.

Our gosling and ducklings were returned to Nanny McCluckins and taken back to their farm in Okotoks! We will miss them very much but are so grateful for the time and experience we had with them.

Our field trip in coming up on Thursday, June 4th! We are all VERY excited for this day. Please watch for an email early next week that explains important details you need to know to prepare your child for the day.

Important Reminders:

May 30 - 1:00 - 4:00 - 2026 Spring Carnival in the North Trail High School East Parking Lot (for those who are interested)

NTH 2026 Spring Carnival

June 1 – Alex Munro Principal and Assistant Principal visiting NLS to meet our Carrington students

June 4 – Alex Munro Open House (for our Carrington families) - AT Alex Munro - see below for information

June 4 – Grade One Field Trip to Telus SPARK

June 9 – 6:00 – In Person School Council Meeting

June 12 – 9:15 am – Volunteer Tea (invitations coming home soon to adults who have volunteered this year)

This week we:

  • finished our first comic! We worked very hard throughout the week to come up with interesting ideas for our characters to say. Have a look at a few samples below. Students will be bringing home their own comic towards the end of June.

  • learned how to read words with -le endings

  • played a game to practice the phonics skills we have learned this year

  • reviewed and practiced using all of our subtraction strategies!
  • planted our sunflower seeds! There are actually many different types of sunflowers! Students chose a seed without knowing which type of sunflower they have picked. They will have to wait until it grows to see which one it is! (Or we might give them a hint at some point!)

  • had a chance to use watercolours to paint a topic of our own choosing!

  • had so much fun practicing gymnastic poses and skills!

Gosling (and ducklings!) Update:

As I am sure many of you have heard, only one of our four geese eggs hatched. Since we felt awful that Brightbill was all by himself, we asked the company who provided us with the eggs if we could possibly have some friends for our little gosling. They let us borrow two ducklings! So, we have had THREE feathered friends in our grade one classes this week! The grade ones decided to name the ducklings Stormy and Pepper. You can see them in the pictures below!

We had a chance to spend a full day with the gosling and the ducklings. We got to feed them (they eat while in the water), we got to see them swim and we also got to see them run and walk in an enclosed pen. They have brought so much joy to all of us. We even had a chance to gently pet and hold the gosling! (The duckling did not like to be held) Ask your child what they like to eat!

Sadly, we said goodbye to our gosling and ducklings today as they will be returning to the farm where they came from.

See the pictures below to see what our gosling and ducklings were up to this week!

We were so excited to pet and hold Brightbill!

(We have pictures of every student holding the gosling if they were at school on Friday. They will be putting a copy of this picture in there visual journal so they all have a keepsake to bring home at the end of the year!)

This week we:

  • learned about some special word families where the vowel says its own name!

See if your child can read the following words and sentences:

  • learned that when we see 'tch' in a word, it says the same thing as 'ch'. We see 'tch' after a short vowel!

See if your child can read the following words and sentences:
  • have been learning how to write comics by writing what characters say in the speech bubbles. We started writing our own goose-inspired comic by filling in the first box on a comic featuring some of our favourite characters: Gerald (the elephant) and Pigeon! Ask your child what they made these characters say in this first box below! (We will complete the comic next week and put some completed ones on the blog then!)

  • continued practicing counting back from 20! This is a tough thing to do and a great thing to practice at home!

  • have been learning about what "inverse" operations are! Addition and subtraction are "inverse" operations because they are opposites! When we find the inverse operation, we are 'undoing' what we just did! We have been learning how to write the inverse equation and how to use the inverse equation to check the answers of addition and subtraction equations.

  • reviewed the importance of the three sisters that we planted last week - the corn, beans and squash. Then learned about the FOURTH sister - the SUNFLOWER! The sunflower is the protector of the the three sisters! The sunflowers keep the birds away from the other plants by letting the birds eat its seeds and attracts pollinators (bees). We learned about how sunflowers grow and the life cycle of a sunflower. Next week, we will have a chance to plant our own sunflower seed.
  • had a chance to create a visual journal page about our favourite celebration (that students previously had a chance to orally share about!).

  • continued to practice our volleyball skills in gym!
