EGG UPDATE!

It has been quite the week in grade one! Our first gosling hatched on Tuesday afternoon. We got to watch him pop out of his egg after working hard all day! He was transferred to his new home on Wednesday morning and is getting stronger everyday. Students came into class on Wednesday morning to see our gosling walking and chirping on the smartboard. Their reactions were so special. Unfortunately one of our eggs did not make it, so we have two eggs left. We will give them a float test on Friday and see if they are viable. Have look below at the sequence of pictures outlining of gosling experience this week!

**Please Note: the live feed will be unavailable as our Gosling will be staying at the home of one of our grade one teachers for the long weekend.

This week we:

  • read words, sentences and phrases that have a soft /g/ sound. The soft /g/ sound is found in words where the 'g' is followed by letters e, i or y. The soft /g/ sounds that same a the /j/ sound. The soft /g/ sound is found in words such as 'gist', 'gem', 'giraffe', and 'surgery'. Have your child read the sentences below.

  • began learning about fictional story elements such as characters, setting, events and story problem. We read through books to identify what the settings, characters and story problems were!

  •  We also explored what a comic is and read a variety of comics. Students put all this new knowledge together to write a comic together as a class using the familiar characters Pigeon and Gerald!

  • practiced reading the heart words: smallkindwildold

  • practiced reading passages during our reading practice time. These passages are varied so that each student is reading text at their level. Students are encouraged to make pictures in their head, as there are no pictures that accompany the text. (At a later time, students will draw a picture to demonstrate their understanding of the text they are reading.)

  • learned the new subtraction strategy: counting back. This new strategy will help students use mental math to quickly solve subtraction equations. Students put the biggest number (the first number in the equation) in thier head and then use their fingers to count backwards the amount that is being taken away. In order to use the counting back strategy, students must know how to count backwards from 20 to 0.

  • used the Indigenous books about the Three Sisters to learn about the relationship and benefits of planting the three sisters close to each other - corn, beans and squash. Ask your child to tell you the story of the three sisters and ask your child about how the corn, beans and squash help each other grow strong and big. As a class, we planted these seeds and are excited to see how they grow and support each other. We also learned about what a plant needs to survive and how plants and animals meet their need for food differently.

Ask your child what each of these are.

First we planted corn seeds in the middle

Then we planted bean seeds around the corn seeds.

Finally we planted squash seeds at the four corners.
  • had a sharing circle and each student had the opportunity to share about the celebration that is important to them and their family. Students were able to reference the paper that families filled out together. This was a wonderful time of sharing and we thank you for your support at home to discuss this with your child!
  • began learning volleyball skills in gym. We learned how to set and spike the ball! We had a lot of fun and Mr. Newton said we did a really well!
