Hello families,
How is it February already? The weather has been so nice this week and the students have enjoyed being outside. Please keep an eye on the weather and make sure your child is wearing the necessary clothing for when the temperatures drop again.

There are many things happening in February so please take note of the important reminders below.

Valentine's Card Exchange:

This year, Valentine’s Day is on Saturday, February 14 but the last day of classes that week is Wednesday, February 11.  On Wednesday, February, 11th our class will recognize and approach Valentine’s Day discussions as opportunities for students learn more about how their actions of kindness, gratitude, friendship and small, thoughtful gestures can positively impact the world around them.

We will have an optional exchange of Valentine’s cards/notes from home. Please see the paper that was sent home on Wednesday. We ask that students sign enough cards for each child in their class. Students do not bring cards for both Mrs. Owens and Miss Pratt's classes. If your child is in Mrs. Owens' class they can bring 20 cards. If your child is in Miss Pratt's class they can bring 21 cards. We are not providing a list of names for students in our classes. Please have your child sign their name on each card only. This makes it easier for students to pass them out when they cannot read everyone's name independently.

If you child would like to bring a message of kindness to other students before February 11, we ask that you respect the following expectations:

  • - Each child in the class should receive a message if your child would like to send something.  (There is no expectation that your child will send a message, but we request that if your child does bring a note or Valentine that no student in their class is left out.)
  • - What is written is kind

Cards can be bought from stores like Dollarama and Walmart or can be made at home.

For safety reasons, no candy, chocolate or other food items can be handed out. (If your child brings any candy, chocolate or food items, they will be sent back home with them.) Thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

Important Reminders:

February 11 – SPIRIT DAY: Pink or Red Day

February 11 – Popcorn Fundraiser delivery (Orders can be placed at healthyhunger.ca up to February 7)

February 12 and 13 – NO SCHOOL – Teachers’ Convention

February 16 – NO SCHOOL – Family Day

This week we:

  • went on a winter walk through the community. It was our first walk off school property and the students did an amazing job. In fact, we ended up walking for almost 40 minutes!

  • learned the new vowel team sound 'ai', like in the words 'rain' and 'snail'. Have your child read the words and sentence below!

  • learned the new vowel team sound 'ay', like in the words 'shirt' and 'first'. Have your child read the words and sentence below!

  • completed a writing warm up to help us practice writing words and warm up our writing brains! Ask your child to write the words for some of these pictures at home.

  • learned the heart words: word, away, said, says

  • learned how to level up our sentences in order to write SUPER SENTENCES! When we write super sentences we want to add more detail. Asking questions helps up to add detail!

So instead if writing, "The bird is flying." we could write super sentences like:
"The bird is flying with its friends."
"The bird is flying at night."
"The bird is flying in the sky."
"The bird is flying very fast."

Ask you child to add a detail to the following sentence: "I like to swim."

  • We added detail to different sentences on our whiteboards such as: "I can jump." and "I see a dog."

  • worked on 'levelling up' some boring sentences by adding detail! Then we chose one sentence to draw a picture for!

  • learned about Grounghog Day through read alouds and discussions, then drew and labelled our own groundhog.

  • explored the difference between equality and inequality with a scale as well as with different manipulatives and amounts. Ask you child what "equals" means. Ask your child to show you the symbol for 'equal' and 'not equal'.

  • began learning about addition! We learned some new words and symbols as well as our first strategy to help us solve simple addition equations.

  • practiced curling in gym! Ask your child how to play the game of curling.

  • began learning about what the winter olympics are through videos, books, songs and movement breaks!
