Hello families,

Important Reminders:

April 16 - Fun Lunch - Papa John's & Cobbs (for those who order)
April 22 - Earth Day - Wear green or blue
April 24 - NO SCHOOL

This week we:
  • practiced what to do in the event of a lockdown. Students quickly moved to their meeting area within the classroom and sat quietly together until the police office and Mrs. Docherty came to tell us that the practice lockdown was over. They said we did a great job!
  • learned the new Lively Letter sound 'au' and 'aw', like in the words 'haul' and 'thaw'. Have your child read the words and sentence below!

  • began getting ready some important visitors coming to grade one. We are learning lots of facts about geese (and Canadian geese) because we are getting gosling eggs next week! We will have a chance to watch the eggs, see how to take care of the eggs and experience the hatching of baby geese (goslings). We will get to have the babies for a week or so after they hatch. We are all very excited for this experience!
  • made jot notes on a new graphic organizer and then used them to write sentences about the diet of a goose

  • reviewed all the heart words that we have learned so far! These words are extremely important for students to be able to read quickly without sounding them out. This will help students read books at their level more smoothly and accurately.
  • learned new heart words too! We learned the words: many, little, only

  • practiced making connections to books by thinking about what parts of our brain connected to the book (memories, facts, etc.)! We read "It's Not Fair" and "The Brave Book of Firsts" and students practiced thinking about what connections they could make. Ask your child what connections they made to one of these stories!

  • decomposed 3D shapes by tracing their faces to see what 2D shapes they are made of.

  • composed 3D shapes using different materials and manipulatives during math stations.

  • Used makerspace materials to build!

  • sorted 3D shapes into two different groups based on the shape of their faces, number of edges or corners, or different characteristics such as if they roll or not.

  • learned about the four different ways that instructions can be given: verbal, audio, written or visual. Students learned through various demonstrations and tests that some instruction have to be given in the correct order to get the desired outcome while other instructions will still produce the same outcome if the steps are given in different orders. Ask your child about some of the ways we figured this out! (*hint: ask them about the orange juice, the snack, handwashing and putting on your shoes!)
  • practiced our throwing skills with some games in the gym!
