GOOSE EGGS!!
Our goose eggs have arrived! We received four eggs that we get to take care of until they hatch. They are much larger than chicken eggs and will take anywhere from 28 to 35 days to hatch. The eggs and the incubator will be housed across the hallway in Mrs. Nakaska's grade one classroom but we get to visit them often. With water birds, they need to be lightly misted with water each day to mimic Mama going for a quick swim and coming back. We also get to try candling our eggs. This gives us a chance to see if we have fertilized eggs or not and it does not hurt the eggs or the geese.
Important Reminders:
April 22 - Earth Day - Wear green or blue
April 24 - NO SCHOOL
Skills to practice at home:
- skip counting by 2s to 20. Your child can look at these numbers while they are learning but then have then do it without looking when they are ready.
This week we:
- learned how adding an '-s' to the end of a noun makes it plural and adding an '-s' to a verb makes the word mean "now". Ask your child to read some of the words and sentences below.
- continued to practice reading the books in our reading folders! We got a chance to practice with whisperphones and to read to our BUDDIES!
- read books and watched videos to learn about the habitat of a goose. Next, we made jot notes on our new graphic organizer and then used it to write sentences about where a goose lives.
- reviewed the heart words: place, their, most and more
- worked together to build a concrete graphs about the kid of indoor shoes we have in grade one. We learned how to turn concrete graphs into a pictograph. We will work more with concrete graphs and pictographs next week.
- continued to learn about computer science and the importance of giving instruction. Students sequenced three-step instructions and worked together to give each other instructions that include directions to get to a desired location.
- used the iPads to learn all about a new app called Scratch Jr. Students worked individually to move a chosen character using different commands. It is a free app, for children aged 5 to 7, and give children to opportunity to program their own stories and games.
- began drumFIT in gym this week. DrumFIT provides cardio exercise using drumming, music and whole body movement. Students used drumsticks to hit a stability ball that sits in a stand. They followed the beat of the music, the movements of Mr. Newton and sometimes the movement of a student leader, as well as some YouTube videos.
