Hello families,

We were so happy to welcome all our grade ones back to school. We hope you all had a lovely and restful break!

Important Reminders:

January 12 – Kindergarten Registration begins

January 15 – Little Steps Pre-Registration begins (for Harvest Hills and Coventry Hills families looking for Before and After School Care within Northern Lights School). Register at https://littlestepschildcare.ca/osc-registration/ any time on or after January 15

This week, we:

  • continued to practice how to read words that have King Ed at the end! Ask your child what King Ed's job is and what he says to the vowel in front of him! We practiced reading words and sentences with King Ed in them. See if your child can read the words and sentences below!

  • listened to stories about Winter and discussed the different things we know about Winter and can do in the Winter. Students wrote words and sentences about this Winter picture.

  • learned the heart words: these, there, they, saw

  • read books to practice the skills we are working on!

  • continued to practice skip counting by 5s. Ask your child to skip count by 5s to 100!

  • listened to read alouds and learned what it means to wonder and come up with questions about people, things, events and experiences

  • shared questions we were wondering during a walk and talk with a partner and in a sharing circle. Ask your child what is something they wonder!

  • learned about different properties of objects (heavy, light, small, big, etc.) and went on a property hunt to find different objects that had that property
  • described a chosen toy using different properties (colour, size, texture etc.)

  • compared the length of 2 objects with a partner and independently. We used the sentences: "The ________ is shorter. The ________ is longer.

  • reviewed what is expected and unexpected behaviour at school and why it is important that we are consistently showing expected behaviour

  • had a lot of fun travelling through the Mission Impossible obstacle course in gym!
