 Hello families,

What a cold and snowy week it has been! Thank you to everyone who has been dressed for the cold weather all week!

Important Reminders:

February 25 - Pink Shirt Day

March 6 – Last day for Purdys Chocolatier Fundraiser orders

This week, we:

  • had a VERY special guest come to Northern Lights School. Melissa Allan, the author of the book "Brave Like the Buffalo", talked to us about her book, about how she became an author and where she came up with the idea for her book. She also taught us the song she wrote that goes with her book!

  • learned the new Lively Letter sound 'ou' and read words and sentences with this new sound. Ask your child where you find 'ou' in a word!

  • learned the new Lively Letter sound 'ow' and read words and sentences that contained this new sound! We learned that 'ow' usually happens at the end of a word.

  • learned the new heart words: sound, know, each

  • worked on our writing warmup to help us practice writing words with sounds we have already learned. Ask your child to pick some pictures to write the words for you! They can also practice writing them in SUPER sentences!

  • used markers to create pathways and used the Ozobot robots to follow the pathways we made

  • explored different objects and how they move (roll, bounce, slide, rotate, swing). Ask you child how objects around your home move or ask them about some of the objects below and how they move.
  • learned about the addition strategy of using number bonds and practiced using number bonds to compose (put together) and decompose (take apart) numbers

7 + 4 = 11
13 + 2 = 15

2 + 7 = 9

We wanted a BIG challenge! We got very excited!

999 + 31 = 1030

  • started to build our addition fluency by doing 'fast facts'! Students have one minute to complete as many as they can. We will do this everyday and students will work at their own pace and at their own level.

  • learned about Chinese New Year and created a dragon puppet to represent part of this important celebration

  • continued to learn about Canadian symbols, such as the Canadian flag, and how they represent special things about Canada. We connected this to the Olympics and how we are so proud to cheer for Canada!
