This week we:
- had a very special guest visit our class to talk about the Olympic sport: Skeleton. Years ago, Mr. Russ won medals in the World Cup! He brought his sled and his gear for us to see! He showed us different pathways for the skeleton across the world. A few students had a chance to dress up in his gear and try out the sled with a skeleton 'simulator'.
- learned how to identify open and closed syllables in words
OPEN SYLLABLES
CLOSED SYLLABLES
- recognized Pink Shirt Day by listening to stories, watching videos, attending a whole school assembly, working with our grade four buddies and having a new kindness mission each day
- used two new addition strategies: 'counting on' and 'drawing pictures'
When using the 'counting on' strategy, students put the biggest addend in their head and put up fingers for the amount of the next addend. For example, for '2 + 7 =' students would put 7 in their head and then say 8, 9 while pointing to their two fingers that are up. Students understand that the last number said is the sum of the equation.
When drawing pictures to solve addition equations, students draw simple, clear pictures to represent each addend, then count all the pictures to find the sum. We will continue to practice this strategy independently next week!
